Stephanie + Michael’s beautiful Providence, RI Winter wedding at Cafe Nuovo
A Winter wedding in New England can be great fun with great light and great people. Stephanie and Michael are just those folks. They came my way as many clients do from referrals through another wedding–Steph was the maid of honor in a wedding I photographed last year. She watched us work that day and loved the images so when she called it was so exciting for me since that group of tight friends were so sweet and loved a good time like nobody else.
They had a great day/night planned for their Winter wedding that was all centered in downtown Providence, RI. We started at the Biltmore getting ready and its classical interior styling that harkens back to great days of old. Next up was a majestic mass at the First Unitarian Church of Providence timed perfectly as the thin Winter sun just started to reach Golden Hour gorgeousness as we exited the ceremony. We were further aided by some mix up with the limos that gave us extra time to craft some epic shots while transport was arranged. There are always silver linings–you just have to take advantage of them.
The reception was in the epicenter of downtown at Cafe Nuovo in Citizens Plaza. The main dining room offered 180 degree views of the urban environment and dancing was in the bar area. One thing that Stephanie and Michael arranged that really made for some spectacular photos was having their first dance in the dining room area amidst the tables and ambiance of that space. They rocked well into the night squeezing every bit out of Cafe Nuovo’s grandeur before heading for some late night karaoke at the Boombox.
Stephanie and Mike had a smile on the whole day and their gentle go-with-the-flow attitudes were a perfect balance to the party animals they were throughout. It’s so much fun when things come together like this–I was just wishing for a flake or two of snow to complete this Winter wedding but happy again that it never materialized as a made my 2 hour drive home very late that night. Silver linings.

Diana + Ryan’s beautiful Summer Wedding
The Connors Center, Dover, Mass.
Diana and Ryan are that couple that’s always smiling and laughing. I remember from our epic engagement session how Ryan just wanted to please Diana–he was game for anything and it really made things easy that day. Fast forward to their wedding and the forecasted threat of rain never materialized but not for one minute did either of these two show any concern. It just didn’t matter. All their friends and family were here and they were going to party and celebrate like crazy.
The Connors Center is such a fabulous venue to photograph with stone archways, epic staircases and beautiful gardens. And that natural rustic beauty inspired them to have a beautiful clear-topped reception tent. St. John the Evangelist Church provided a grand space for the nuptials and the Connors Center did the rest. An amazing clear top tent sent amidst the beautiful back garden area at the Connors Center was a beautiful unique addition. It brought in the connection to the outdoor space that just worked for their wedding. Great tunes from DJ Beas from HOT 96.9 in Boston pumped the crowd up all night long as this crowd never left the dance floor. Fun. Beautiful. Wedding.

Nikki + Keilin’s late Summer wedding at the Lyman
My favorite classic New England Estate to photograph a wedding, especially during the Summer months. These guys had their ceremony on the back lawn, a bunch of fun lawn games to play and even had dinner al fresco. The Lyman has plenty of nooks and quite spaces inside and out.
Great bunch of vendors helped make it all a beautiful day/night:
Florist: The Concord Flower Shop
Caterer: Tastings
Entertainment: Rob Wier
Venue and linen and chairs: Lyman Estate
Cape light: Jamie + Aaron and listening to what your client wants
Warm ocean breezes and late Summer Cape light greeted me as I met Jamie and Aaron for their engagement shoot in New Seabury near Mashpee. I love late afternoon shoots and almost always try to take advantage of this beautiful time of day for engagement photos whether in a city location like Boston or in a more rustic setting. We started out in jeans and beach wear in the dunes and seagrass along the beach then found some great sunset light. We even enlisted a few young boys to row me out on the water for a fresh perspective on a great photo spot.
Jamie had some ideas for the shoot in her head and kept telling me that I can do whatever I want as long as I get this one shot for her. She had in her mind the idea of her and Aaron sitting on the overturned sailboat somewhere on the beach with the seagrass behind them. I’ve worked with art directors and editors my whole career and told Jamie we’d try to create the image she had in mind. We worked at it for about 30 minutes moving the boat here and there. We worked on their position and expressions and then added in some golden fill light from the reflector to give the final shot its warm Summer glow.
I think it is important to connect with my clients and always encourage them to tell me what they want. Some clients are very specific and others just say, “We trust you; do what you do.” I’ll always do what I do–and for the most part that is why they hire me but there is a certain satisfaction when you show the client the image on the back of the camera and she says, “That is exactly how I pictured it!”
Gwen + Chun Fai at the Connors Center in Dover
When your tax accountant wants to hire you to photograph his daughter’s wedding–you jump at the chance. What a beautiful day for Gwen and Chun Fai at the Connors Center in Dover, Massachusetts. This Boston wedding photographer had the pressure on to deliver the goods after years of this man doing right by me when tax time came around each year. We had perfect weather for thelate Summer wedding ceremony in the garden. Gwen knew what she wanted to the smallest detail and I wanted to make sure her photographs reflected every bit of her meticulous planning. Enjoy this quick peak into their day.

Sonia + Amilton at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel
After their engagement shoot last year I knew this would be an incredibly fun wedding and it certainly lived up to my expectations. Wow! They and all their friends and family really put on a show dancing and partying like rock stars. Chris, my second camera that day said, “They were the best dancers he’s ever seen at any wedding.” They just had fun from the oldest to the very young they all celebrated the marriage of this beautiful couple well into the night.
Also, I completed my first Brenizer-method stitch of 41 images using my 50mm at F1.6. The photo is the first in the slideshow above.
Diana + Ryan Engagement Fun
Engagement sessions are as much for me to get to know my clients in a more intimate way prior to their wedding as they are for couples to get some fun, romantic pix in their play clothes. Diana and Ryan were game for anything and made sure to keep it light and fun throughout–as this I’ve come to know is really who they are. I can’t wait for their wedding!
I love doing these sessions on a weekday night (less people) and between the hours leading up to sunset and just beyond as this is the nicest light to work with. Boston is such a walkable city that we are able to get to a variety of places easily.
Jessica & Alex at The Liberty Hotel, Boston, Massachusetts
Jessica and Alex had a wonderful wedding at the Liberty Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. We decided to go off-site to get some cityscapes in around Beacon Hill and the Public Garden–knowing all along that we’d take advantage of the unique spaces within the hotel throughout the night.
Emma & Steve at The State Room in Boston
O wonderful it is the feeling
Having all the burden lifted,
I am for a day only a ghost of a being
All my creative talents gifted,
Allow me the space to truly create
For on this night I am not in charge-ifted.
A scholar of iambic pentameter I am also not, but how glorious was this day to let Nathan take the reins, and the stress, and all the formals, and allow me to be creative and free. I once had the pleasure to listen to Beverley Hills wedding photographer, Joe Buissink, speak about our profession. He said his secret–besides shooting on “P” mode, was to have someone else be the lead photographer so he could be free to create.
Emma and Steve’s wedding was at The State Room–60 State Street in Boston and one of the preeminent Boston wedding photographer venues in the city. One of the best little secrets at this location is the smaller Harbor Salon located off to the side of the Great Room. I’ve photographed weddings where this space was used as the cocktail area before for a celebration in the Great Room, but on this night, this little big room pulled double duty as both chapel and reception hall for this eco-centric couple’s wedding day.

Like changing the Garden parquet from ice hockey to basketball in one afternoon, State Room staff flipped this room in just a cocktail hour!
